The Alaska Sudan Medical Project is made up of a small group of Alaskan volunteers who are committed to helping Dr. Jill Seaman of Bethel, Alaska and the people of Sudan. This is a grass roots effort which is growing daily. Our team members include people from all walks of life, but with one thing in common. A strong desire to use Alaska's can do attitude to help a group of people who are desperate for any help. Jack Hickel. Jack Hickel is a board certified family physician working for Native health in Anchorage, Alaska. He also has a diploma in Tropical Medicine. For 15 years he worked in Swaziland as a medical missionary, helping to run hospitals and bush clinics. He still does annual medical trips to various countries around the world. Lori Gibbons. Lori has worked as a nurse for approximately six years, currently working at the Alaska Native Medical Center with Southcentral Foundation. In November 2007 Lori traveled with Jack Hickel to Old Fangak where they worked with Jill and brought back to Alaska news of the great need of the village. She has worked as a nurse volunteer for medical mission organizations in Africa, Peru, and Ecuador.
Brett Burroughs. Bret just returned from a fact finding trip to Kenya and Sudan. He will be a leader of the health center construction in November. He is the owner of Rotating Equipment based in Anchorage. He worked in Africa for 3 years on construction projects in the past.
Pete Hickel. Pete is a lifelong Alaskan and owner of Hickel Construction & Engineering, Inc., based in Anchorage. Pete oversaw and produced the design documents for the new facility, utilizing construction materials which could be purchased in Sudan and economically transported to Old Fangak.
Grant Fairbanks. Grant has lived in western Alaska on the Kuskokwim River since 1973. He and his wife Debbie homesteaded and raised 6 children on the Holitna River. Grant has been self employed in the heating and construction fields for 30 years. Grant and Debbie have known Dr. Jill Seaman since she moved to Alaska and it’s through this friendship that they have become involved with the Sudan project. Grant and his son Zack will be drilling the wells and installing the solar and hand pumps for Old Fangak and the clinic.
Rich Webb. An educator by both profession and disposition, Richard worked for a number of years in Africa, as well as in Peru, Poland and China. He is currently President of the Governing Board of Twindly Bridge Charter School in Wasilla. He is also President of the Matsu Charter School Association and a member of the Board of Valley Performing Arts.
Bill Noll. Bill has had a successful 40 year private and public career in Alaska. He served on the City Council of Seward, including Mayor. Bill also worked in both the Hickel and Murkowski administrations. Bill has served on several boards including the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, Alaska Energy Authority, Alaska Railroad Corporation and Alaska Sealife Center.
John Waterhouse. John is a Native American of S’Klallam, Chippewa and Cree Blood. Currently serving as the Director of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council, his past career experiences include management positions at several major companies. He served in the U.S. Navy for twenty years and retired as a Chief.
David Fenn. David Fenn has lived in Anchorage with his family for the last 6 years.
He is currently working as an Improvement Advisor with Southcentral
Foundation. David has previously lived in rural Alaska while teaching at
a secondary school, and has spent some time traveling in East Africa.
Todd Hardesty. Todd is the owner of Alaska Video Postcards, Inc, an Anchorage based video production company. Formerly a news reporter and News Director at KTUU, Todd has spent the past 21 years producing Alaska subject documentaries and industrial films. Todd will travel with the group to Old Fangak and produce a documentary about the Alaska Sudan Medical Project.
